Marriott Hotels and Resorts has been hit with a huge class-action lawsuit over the data breach which saw 500 million customers affected, and that’s just the start. Under GDPR, the hospitality giant could face the world’s first significant fine under the new data protection act.

Despite Marriott being headquartered in the US, the breach falls under European wide GDPR rules, meaning the group now faces financial penalties of up to 4% of its annual global revenue. Home-sharing websites, such as Airbnb and HomeAway, have been giving the holiday industry a run for its money of late, with many choosing to book through their easy to use online services rather than the more established holiday companies.

Marriott International have been piloting a home-sharing program which began in April. They risked into the market on a six month trial, in collaboration with UK based home rental company Hostmaker.

Marriott already have 6,500 hotels and 110 million loyalty program members and are determined to grow even bigger by entering the home-sharing market.

Four Points by Sheraton Venice Mestre has opened as part of Marriott, under a franchise agreement with the Italian management company DHotels. The new location is in the urban area of Mestre which is one of the most economically developed regions of Italy.

The hotel is the fifth addition to Four Points in Italy joining Four Points by Sheraton Padova, Four Points by Sheraton Milano and Four Points by Sheraton Bolzano fortifying the robust portfolio in the country.
